Book Series I Like

There has been a trend that I have seen going around Facebook recently that I’ve enjoyed, but honestly would like to make a change to. It’s the X number of days of books that you like with no explanation challenge. I don’t like the part of the rules that you don’t get to say anything about the book. Hearing why people like that particular book and their reviews on the book are what make me personally want to read them. So I’m going to put my own spin on the challenge, I’m going to show some book series that I personally like, as well as talk about them! I'll elaborate on some more than others, but all the summaries are from me!

The Keatyn Chronicles by Jillian Dodd

Keatyn is a teenage girl who’s mom is a famous actress and mom's boyfriend / her stepdad an A-list actor starring in a big time movie series. She feels that she has many separate sections of her life: surf friends, school friends, party friends... This made her feel like she was a completely different person depending on who she was with. Over the course of a few months she makes some changes so she didn't have to keep changing depending on who she was with. Keatyn confides in a man she met on the beach who promised her a role in his movie - a remake of one of mother's first roles as she was thinking about dipping her toes in acting. She had a plan to merge all of her groups at her birthday, but when her mom's stalker turned out to be her stalker and attempted to kidnap her at her party, things changed.

For her and her family's protection, Keatyn moved across the country to a boarding school under a new name. At the new school she had a fresh start to be completely herself all of the time, no separate groups, and make some genuine friends. This worked out pretty well, except for the fact they didn’t really know who she really was. Now she also had to take care of the stalker who was always waiting for a chance to strike. She would protect her family, even if it killed her.

Books in order: Stalk Me, Kiss Me, Date Me, Love Me, Adore Me, Hate Me, Come and Get Me

That Boy series by Jillian Dodd

This series follows J.J. and her two best friends, Phillip and Danny as they grow up together. They go through relationships, devastating loss, and life together. As they grow up their friendships grow stronger as they go through the challenges that life throws at them. J.J. also has to decide, which boy does she really love? Once she makes that fairly easy decision, will she be able to keep him?

There have been two more books that have been written in this series, but from what I have seen they do not focus on J.J. and Phillip, but their best friend Danny. I plan to listen to them once I am done listening to my current book. The first one has only just become available on Audible, and the other will be out in a couple of weeks.

This series is not related to The Keatyn Chronicles, but is in the same world. You do not have to read one series to read the other, but Keatyn is vaguely mentioned in the third book (That Baby).

Books in order: That Boy, That Wedding, That Baby, (That Love, That Ring)

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

If you don’t already recognize this book series, it was also made into a TV show on Freeform called Shadowhunters. Whereas they took the story line in a slightly different direction than they did in the book, I personally really enjoyed watching the show.

This series is about a 15 year old girl in New York, Clary, who often felt like there was a chunk of her life that was missing. When her mother turns up missing, she learns of this shadow world that she had been born into but her mother had hidden from her, going as far as altering her memories. She meets people, fellow shadowhunters, who would quickly become some of her best friends. They help her find her mom, but that leads into so much more.

Throughout this series, Clary gains a whole family, finds the love of her life (not without many obstacles), and gets some best friends in the process. She also has to deal with family conflict from before she was born,

Books in order: City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls, City of Heavenly Fire

The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare

This series is like an extension off of The Mortal Instruments. It takes place five years after City of Heavenly Fire, but follows Emma, her parabatai Julian, and the other Shadowhunters of the Los Angeles Institute. They were friends with Clary and the others in New York, but they have their own problems and adventures. They are making deals with faeries, working with dark magic, and breaking the law.

In this three book series, Emma struggles with forbidden love, loss, people pulling for power - pulling her and the people she loved down in order to do so.

Books in order: Lady Midnight, Lord of Shadows, Queen of Air and Darkness

Strange Practice --> Dreadful Company by Vivian Shaw

This two book series is about a normal, human, woman named Dr. Greta Helsing who is a doctor to the undead: vampires, mummies, zombies and many others of the like. Greta helps her supernatural friends, mostly vampires, stop a cult of monks killing both human and undead Londoners. In the second book she, and then later she and her friends deal with a coven of vampires in Paris messing with the fabric of reality.

Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer

Yes, I know that me loving this series is a little controversial. The first Twilight movie came out when I was in the sixth grade. I thought it looked interesting and thought I would also read the books. Sixth grade was not a good year for me. I was severely bullied and was just going through a dark time in my life in general. I really related to Bella, and the Twilight series was my escape from everything.

Bella is a shy girl that felt that there really wasn’t any place that she really fit in well. When her mother got remarried she decided to move in with her dad. At her new high school she meets this mysterious family that no one else in town has been able to get close to. She slowly gets to know Edward, then quickly falls in love with him. She finds her place where she fits in with Edward and his vampire family.

Books in order: Twilight, (Midnight Sun) , New Moon, Eclipse, (The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner), Breaking Dawn.

Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

I feel like this one is a no brainer. I grew up with Harry Potter. This series will always hold a special place in my heart. J.K. Rowling created a whole new world of magic and imagination that continues to live on for so many of us. Not only is there the prequel series, Fantastic Beasts, but people are expanding and creating more of the Harry Potter world through fan-fictions.

Harry stopped the dark wizard, Voldemort, when he was only a baby. When he turned eleven, not knowing anything about the wizarding world, Harry learns of what he did, and spends the next seven years trying to get rid of Voldemort for good. Along the way he learns more about himself, the family he never got to meet, and magic. He finally gets friends and learns what it’s like to be cared about for the first time in his life.

Books in order: Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows
