May Recap: Concussion, Staycation, Birthday's...
So, you may have noticed that I made one blog post at the beginning of the month of May. Then the rest of the month I was pretty much MIA. I promise that I’ve got a good excuse for not writing anything in the last month. It isn’t just the fact that May has been a semi busy month, at least compared to the last couple of months!
On May 6th, I sat down in a chair that had aluminum legs and one of the back legs broke off of the chair. Because of the leg breaking, I fell backwards - hitting my head on a tile wall, and to the side - spraining my wrist catching myself. I know, something that would only happen to accident-prone Emily. I have a request to whoever has the curse, hex bag, voodoo doll, or whatever else on me to please stop because 2020 has been hard enough without the major illnesses and head injury.
Anyway, after I hit my head I gave myself a few minutes to assess myself. I decided that I definitely didn’t feel right so I called my mom home from work so she could take me to the emergency room. Even though there really didn’t seem to be very many people there, it at least seemed like we were there forever because of all of the COVID-19 precautions that they were having to take. I had a CT scan done of my head and was observed for a little while, and when they finally released me they said I had a concussion and that I needed to rest for a few days. I still have daily headaches and light sensitivity, but it is getting better. The light sensitivity has made it to where I have had zero desire to get on my computer and write anything.
When I hit my head, I also got whiplash, so some pretty significant neck pain started a few days after. Luckily, my chiropractor is still seeing patients through all of this, so I’ve been working with him to get my neck back in place. He is also working on getting my ribs back in place from when I had bronchitis and coughed them out of place. I am so thankful that God made chiropractors, because I don’t know what I would do without mine at the moment!
The week after I got my concussion, we had planned to go to Fredericksburg for our vacation. Because everything was still shut down and I still wasn’t feeling very well, we decided to stay home. Over the week we got several home improvement projects done, and by we I mean my dad:
He cleaned out and fixed up our back porch. There is still work to be done on it, but there is night and day difference back there. I found a new entertainment center on Amazon to replace the one we’d needed to replace for a few years now, so he disassembled the old one and put together the new one. He also put a coat rack up on the wall, and is about to put a second set of hooks up for hats.
We also tried our hands with a few plants. My dad wanted to plant some mint to try and deter mosquitoes from our area. I wanted a cactus, so we actually got 2: Peach and Pearl. Yes, I am that person that names her plants. Not sorry. We got Pearl in the clearance section because there was a lot of scarring, but we decided that we would give a go at nursing her back to health.
At the end of the week the three of us made a trip to Denton Valley Farms for the first time. We didn’t go and pick any of our own food - we didn’t make it out there until the heat of the day, so we stuck to the store where things were already picked and ready for us. We got some fresh fruit and vegetables to grill and put with breakfast. It was a cute place that we couldn’t believe we hadn’t been to before that. We will definitely be going back.
May is also the month of birthdays. On the 22nd I turned 23. I had some cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes. We met up with some friends and had a laid back day. My mom and I went shopping so I could choose out some things for myself. There wasn’t a whole lot to do since things were still all closed for the most part, but I had a very nice and enjoyable day. It's also really disappointing that there isn't a catchy Taylor Swift song that goes with turning 23 😝.
My dad’s birthday was on the 24th. Things went similarly for his day. We went for a long drive down some back roads since there still wasn’t much open, and it was a Sunday further limiting our options. It was nice to have a nice and quiet, stress-free day for all 3 of us. Then on the 31st we met up with my mom's side of the family to celebrate the 4 May birthdays.
It’s been both a long and fast month. Definitely wish that I had taken more pictures. I’m definitely hoping and praying that nothing happens this month (knock on wood) like there has been the last three to my health. I think we can all agree by now that 2020 is cursed, but I’m pretty sure that mine personally is cursed 😂.
I want to end this by saying that I am praying for the friends and family of George Floyd as this must be an extremely difficult time for them as they are seeking justice for his murder and grieving him. It is truly devastating what happened to him, and it should have never happened. His life mattered just as much as mine or anyone else's. Race doesn’t determine worth. Every human is beautifully and wonderfully made in the image of God, no matter what their skin color is. I am also praying for this country, and the decisions, both verbal and physical, that all sides are making through this time. I’m going to pray for the hospital workers in particular that are having to take care of injuries while still having to keep up with the COVID-19 protocols.
This is all that I am going to say on the matter on social media because there is enough hate and fighting going on in the world right now and I don’t care to add to it. I am going to help in the way that I feel will do the most to help everyone, and that is to pray to God for peace, answers, and solutions. Every time I see something new online or on the news I pray for the people, police officers, and politicians that I am seeing. God works in mysterious ways and I am putting my trust in him that he will guide us through this time.
Just because I am taking this stance doesn’t mean I’m saying anyone else should or shouldn't, that is your decision. This is what I’m doing to help while still taking care of myself. I did feel that I should touch on this topic since it was a major event that happened in May, that should be talked about.
Everyone, please stay safe whether you are sitting in a chair or going to the grocery store and going against the arrows in the aisles! You don’t want to get a concussion when the chair breaks, or crash shopping carts!
